El astigmatismo es uno de los problemas de visión más frecuentes, pero mucha gente aún no sabe exactamente lo que significa. ¿Qué es el astigmatismo?
El astigmatismo es un problema de visión frecuente, tanto que hasta un tercio de la población puede padecerlo en mayor o menor grado. De hecho, algunas personas con pequeñas cantidades de astigmatismo pueden no experimentar un efecto notable en la claridad de su visión.
El astigmatismo es un problema de visión causado cuando la cubierta frontal transparente del ojo (la córnea) tiene una forma irregular. Por ello, una persona no es capaz de enfocar claramente la luz cuando entra en el ojo. Se supone que la córnea tiene forma redonda, como la parte superior de un globo terráqueo; las personas con astigmatismo tienen córneas con forma de huevo -imagínate medio balón de fútbol en vez de uno de béisbol-. Cuando miran algo, la luz que entra en el ojo se curva de forma desigual, lo que provoca visión borrosa o distorsión de la visión.
La cirugía ocular LASIK para la corrección del astigmatismo puede ser una opción para quien padece astigmatismo leve o moderado. La corrección del astigmatismo ofrece una serie de ventajas: no sólo afecta a la visión, sino que las personas con astigmatismo suelen sufrir también fatiga visual y dolores de cabeza. También éstas pueden aliviarse a menudo una vez tratado el astigmatismo.
LASIK y astigmatismo
La cirugía ocular con láser para el astigmatismo altera la curvatura de la córnea. Al remodelar la córnea para darle una forma más esférica con la cirugía LASIK, el error refractivo del astigmatismo se resuelve cuando la superficie frontal del ojo se vuelve más simétrica. Esta corrección del astigmatismo permite entonces que la luz atraviese correctamente la córnea hasta la parte posterior del ojo y enfoque las imágenes con mayor claridad.
El astigmatismo puede darse en uno o en ambos ojos; sólo hay que tratar el ojo afectado con cirugía LASIK. Debido a la forma irregular del ojo en las personas con astigmatismo, la luz incide en el ojo en múltiples puntos (debería ser un solo punto). Esto envía señales confusas al cerebro, lo que provoca visión borrosa. La corrección del astigmatismo se consigue cuando la cirugía ocular con láser remodela la capa interna de la córnea, lo que permite que la luz que entra en el ojo se enfoque en la capa interna del ojo (retina).
