What is the Average Cost of Laser Eye Surgery

The cost of laser eye surgery can range from as low as $1,499 per eye to up to $2,499 per eye.  What gives? Why such a price difference? Many factors can affect the cost of LASIK, such as:

  • Technology and Equipment: The advancements in LASIK technology have led to various techniques and equipment available for vision correction. Procedures utilizing the latest technology often come with a higher price tag due to the investments required by the clinics in state-of-the-art laser systems.
  • Surgeon’s Expertise and Reputation: Experienced and reputable LASIK surgeons typically charge higher fees. Their expertise and track record may provide added confidence and assurance to patients seeking the best possible outcomes.
  • Geographical Location: LASIK costs can vary significantly depending on the region or city where the procedure is performed. Urban areas or regions with a higher cost of living may have higher LASIK prices compared to rural areas.
  • Pre-operative Evaluation and Post-operative Care: Comprehensive pre-operative evaluations and thorough post-operative care are essential components of LASIK surgery. Clinics that offer extensive evaluations and follow-up appointments may include these services in their package pricing, affecting overall costs.
  • Customization and Additional Services: Customized LASIK procedures tailored to individual eye characteristics may incur additional costs. Some clinics offer package deals that include additional services such as enhancements or lifetime plans, which can influence the overall price.

Will Insurance Cover Cost of Laser Eye Surgery?

Insurance usually does not cover laser eye surgery, unless your job requires perfect vision.  Athletes and combat fighters sometimes qualify for full coverage, for instance.

Often insurance companies negotiate reduced rates for members, though.  If you have insurance, it’s a good idea to ask specifically if the provider you are considering offers discounts for insurance holders like you.  Many U.S. employees also have an FSA, HSA, or HRA to cover health expenses with income-tax-free accounts.  The cost of laser eye surgery is an eligible expense for all these accounts.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

Do you have a flexible spending account through your employer? Many patients use these tax-free funds and apply them to the cost of LASIK eye surgery. Once you complete your Free LASIK Consultation, you can decide how much you would like to contribute from your flex spending or saving program.

Health Savings Account (HSA)

Do you have money set aside for health care expenses? Health saving accounts can be used to pay for medical expenses without the funds being subject to income tax. After your Free LASIK Consultation, you can decide how much you would like to contribute from your HSA toward your LASIK surgery.

Insurance Coverage Discounts

Many patients are eligible for a discount on LASIK procedures from their companies’ vision or health plans. Check with your company’s HR department or with your insurance provider to see if your plan provides a discount for LASIK surgery.

Additional Ways To Afford LASIK Eye Surgery:

  • CareCredit – A unique financing option, CareCredit is a healthcare credit card that can be used to cover medical expenses, including LASIK eye surgery. Choosing CareCredit for LASIK financing allows you to pay in monthly increments, rather than one lump sum. The card is designed specifically with medical costs in mind, and the application process is similar to what you will find with most major credit cards.
  • Tax Refund – Who doesn’t enjoy getting a refund check in the mail around tax time? All the better when you can put those funds toward paying for your LASIK surgery. It’s especially handy during the spring months but you can always set your refund aside in savings if you are planning your procedure during a different time of the year.
  • Personal Financing – This is the catch-all category for financing that comes from your own pocket, and there are many options available. Using funds from your checking or savings accounts is the simplest choice, and you can also use credit/debit cards, funds that come from gifts, an inheritance, side-work, or even that big jug of coins you’ve been saving for a rainy day. If you’re planning to have LASIK in the future, setting those extra infusions of cash aside in savings can go a long way toward covering the procedure when the time is right.

The Real Value of Laser Eye Surgery

The cost of laser eye surgery reflects an elective procedure that has been called life changing. Many people reduce their need for glasses and contacts for years.  The money saved on associated costs reflects only part of the surgery’s value though.  Many find that after LASIK they can do what they could not have done before, such as SCUBA dive, wear off-the-shelf sunglasses, swim, play freely with their children, and travel without hassle.  It’s important to weigh not just the cost of laser eye surgery, but whether the soft gains will increase your quality of living, and thus affect your decision to push forward with the procedure.

What our patients are saying

They Talked Me Through Financing Options

Very easy experience. At the consult the doctor answered any questions I had with such patience. They were happy to work with my FSA account for payment and talked me through financing options. The procedure itself was as smooth as could be and the surgical team was super friendly and talked me through the whole procedure. Post-op care and instructions were thorough and comprehensive. Would absolutely recommend

I Couldn't Be Happier with The End Result!

Everyone was friendly and personable. The time from consultation until my procedure was only 2 weeks and that's because I needed to wait due to my work schedule. My credit isn't the greatest and I was approved for financing through the in-house financing! Highly recommend.

LASIK Eye Surgery: Your Vision Correction FAQs

Man smiling pointing to LASIK FAQs
What is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a revolutionary vision correction procedure that can free you from the hassles of glasses or contacts. During this bladeless laser eye surgery, an excimer laser gently reshapes the cornea with computer-precision to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Say goodbye to visual aids and hello to crystal-clear natural vision!

Is LASIK a Safe Procedure?

With laser vision correction surgery complications are very rare. At The LASIK Vision Institute®, we have some of the most experienced independent LASIK surgeons in the industry. The risk of sight threatening complications is less than 1% overall.

In making the decision to undergo LASIK surgery, be sure to do your research. Choose a LASIK surgeon who is experienced and well respected in the industry and be sure to have a list of questions to ask about the procedure.

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?

The first step in your LASIK journey is an in-depth screening and evaluation by our experienced eye surgeons. During this comprehensive exam, we'll assess your specific vision needs and eye health criteria.
Generally, good LASIK candidates meet the following requirements:

-Age 18 or older (with a stable vision prescription for at least 1-2 years)
-No existing eye diseases or conditions like keratoconus or glaucoma
-Sufficient corneal thickness
-Reasonable refractive error limits for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism

However, exceptions can sometimes be made depending on individual circumstances. Our laser eye surgery experts will take the time to understand your unique vision goals and medical profile. We'll then advise if you're an ideal LASIK candidate or if another vision correction treatment may be better suited for outstanding results.
Don't settle for blurred vision a day longer! Schedule your LASIK consultation now to discover if you're a candidate for improved visual freedom.

Does LASIK Hurt?

The thought of laser eye surgery may seem daunting, but rest assured, LASIK is a painless and comfortable experience. Numbing eye drops are applied to completely anesthetize your eyes before the procedure begins. You may feel a mild pressure sensation around your eye during the laser corneal reshaping, but no pain. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how smooth and painless their LASIK journey is.
To ensure maximum comfort, your surgeon may also prescribe a mild oral sedative to help you stay relaxed throughout the quick 10-15 minute LASIK procedure.

What is Recovery Like After LASIK Surgery?

After your life-changing LASIK procedure, you can expect some minor irritation or a gritty sensation in your eyes for a few hours as the numbing drops wear off. This mild discomfort is temporary and can be easily managed with over-the-counter eye drops or oral medication prescribed by your surgeon.
Most patients find that a short nap after their laser vision correction allows their eyes to rest and reset. When you awake, you'll be amazed at your newfound visual clarity! Your surgeon will also provide medicated eye drops to aid in healing and prevent infection during your swift recovery period.
